چکیده

Introduction Dioxin-like PCBs (IUPAC Nos. 77, 81, 105, 114, 118, 123, 126, 156, 157, 167, 169, and 189) are referred to as dioxin-related compounds and are evaluated together with PCDDs/PCDFs in terms of toxicity . In Japan, the contribution of dioxin-like PCBs to the total TEQ of human intake is comparable to that of PCDDs/PCDFs . Understanding the contributions from different PCB sources is important for developing effective countermeasures against dioxin pollution. The major sources of dioxin-like PCBs in Japan are considered to be those released from use or disposal of industrial PCB products and formed as byproducts during thermal processes 3, . In this study, we estimated the contributions of these sources to the accumulation of dioxin-like PCBs in sediments using a chemical mass balance (CMB) approach and assuming that the dioxin-like PCBs in sediments mainly originated from Kanechlors (KCs: major Japanese PCB products) and incinerator emissions.

Quantitative identification of sources of dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls in sediments by a factor analysis model and a chemical mass balance model combined with Monte Carlo techniques.

The major sources of dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in two sediment cores from Tokyo Bay and Lake Shinji (both in Japan) were identified and their source contributions estimated using two receptor models. The first was a nonnegative constrained factor analysis (FA) model, and the second was a nonnegative constrained chemical mass balance model combined with Monte Carlo techniques ...

Dioxin-like PCBs and PCDD/Fs in surface sediments near the shore of Winam Gulf, Lake Victoria.

Winam Gulf of Lake Victoria is considered to be contaminated with toxic chemicals emanating from anthropogenic activities, especially near large industrial towns such as Kisumu. This has recently caused concerns about its water quality and impact on aquatic organisms and human beings. This study was justified by the need to generate baseline concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (...

A simplified determination method of dioxin toxic equivalent (TEQ) by single GC/MS measurement of five indicative congeners.

Here, we proposed a simplified determination method for dioxin (polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, polychlorinated dibenzofurans, and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)) toxic equivalency (TEQ; based on the World Health Organization-2006 toxicity equivalent factor) in environmental samples collected in Japan. This method has estimated the total TEQ from the concentrations of only five...

Characterization of dioxin-like contamination in soil and sediments from the "hot spot" area of petrochemical plant in Pancevo (Serbia).

PURPOSE Combinatorial bio/chemical approach was applied to investigate dioxin-like contamination of soil and sediment at the petrochemical and organochlorine plant in Pancevo, Serbia, after the destruction of manufacturing facilities that occurred in the spring of 1999 and subsequent remediation actions. MATERIALS AND METHODS Soil samples were analyzed for indicator polychlorinated biphenyls ...

AhR-mediated potency of sediments and soils in estuarine and coastal areas of the Yellow Sea region: a comparison between Korea and China.

Extracts of sediments (n = 45) and soils (n = 37) collected from the coast of the Yellow Sea, in Korea and China, were screened for their ability to induce dioxin-like gene expression in vitro using the H4IIE-luc, transactivation bioassay. Significant dioxin-like potency was observed except for a few soils from Korea. Concentrations of TCDD-EQ (2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin equivalents) i...
